Composer Spotlight : Clint Mansell

We wanted to spotlight some composers that we’re huge fans of at Here and Now. First up, filmscore composer Clint Mansell.

Clint Mansell has a career that spans over 2 decades, and has scored films such as director Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of JG Ballard’s High Rise, Duncan Jones’ Moon and Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan as well as TV projects including screenwriter Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror and the recent DC universe series Titans.

Growing up in Coventry, West Midlands, Clint Mansell was lead vocalist of the band Pop Will Eat Itself. His composer career started in 1996 when he was hired by soon-to-be long time collaborator director Darren Aronofsky for his debut film Pi. Mansell has gone on to compose the music in all but one of Aronofsky’s films since.

Two of Mansell’s most notable and instantly recognisable scores can be found in 2000’s Requiem for a Dream and 2010’s dark thriller Black Swan. Both were films directed by Darren Aronofsky, with the latter being based on Tchaikovsky’s original music for Swan Lake.

With so many original scores under his belt, Mansell has been sampled by the likes of A$AP Rocky and Bastille.
