David Baron – An ARP 2500 Modular Synthesizer Masterpiece

A Tribute to the Legendary ARP 2500 Modular Synth

David Baron’s new album is a sonic deep dive into the legendary ARP 2500 modular synthesizer—an analog synth so rare and unique, only around 100 units were ever made between 1970 and 1981. Crafted by ARP Instruments, the ARP 2500 remains a pinnacle of modular synth design, praised for its complex patching capabilities, distinctive tone, and historical significance in electronic music.

The ARP 2500 in Pop Culture and Music History

Although it went largely unnoticed during its initial release, the ARP 2500 became iconic after its unforgettable appearance in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, where it was used to communicate with alien life. ARP founder Alan R. Pearlman, a former NASA scientist, brought a unique vision to synth design—one that still resonates today among analog and modular synth enthusiasts.

Notably, the ARP 2500 became a favorite of electronic music legends like Jean-Michel Jarre and Pete Townshend. Townshend once remarked:

“Mine plays six notes at once, can have 20 sets of preset control voltages available, six audio signals mixed and instantly usable at various levels. The most incredibly subtle tone colors can be produced using the multimode resonator in conjunction with a normal filter, and the sequencer will provide exhilarating cascades of arpeggios.”

David Baron: Sculpting Sound with the ARP 2500 Modular Synth

On this album, David Baron uses the ARP 2500 as the only sound source. Each piece was built layer by layer using one or two sequenced patches at a time. Every sound is 100% analog and unique to the modular architecture of the ARP 2500.

Production Tools & Signal Chain

Baron’s signal chain showcases a masterful blend of vintage and modern gear:

  • FX & Reverb: Bricasti M7, EMT 240 Plate, Roland Space Echo 501, Vermona Spring Reverb

  • Preamps: Avedis Key Pre

  • Flanging & Delay: AMS Tape Phase Simulator, Eventide Instant Flanger, MXR Flanger/Doubler

  • Minimal compression, careful gain staging, and subtle distortion were applied to preserve the synth’s organic tone.

“The ARP 2500 always ran through the Avedis Key Pre. The sound is beautiful and creamy, yet percussive and forward,” says Baron. “Its envelopes are incredibly snappy, and while the filters can distort, they offer rich tone-shaping possibilities.”

Why the ARP 2500 Still Defines Modular Synth Excellence

Despite its age and complexity—you almost need a degree in physics to operate one—the ARP 2500 remains one of the most revered modular synthesizers in history. Its ability to deliver evolving textures, cinematic arpeggios, and nuanced tone color makes it a timeless tool for sound designers and composers.

David Baron’s album is not just a tribute—it’s a testament to the expressive power of the ARP 2500 modular synth.
