Sinclair 808 - Shadows In My Room

Listen on Apple, Deezer, Pandora, Spotify

The inspiration for ‘Shadows in my Room’ comes partly from Martha Well’s Science Fiction books ‘Murderbot Diaries’, partly from the video game ‘Portal 2’ and from research into schizophrenic art.

Martha Wells in her books describes a Murder Bot with tendency towards self-hacking and a desire to understand the world around them on a deeper level than its original programming affords. Not to me unlike someone struggling with a mental illness, or simply free will. The AI in Portal 2, named “GladOs”, has a tendency towards passive aggressive behaviour and often exhibits negative human like emotions or traits.

Schizophrenic art is fascinating to Sinclair 808. The connection between mental illness and art is a well- documented one, but schizophrenic artists in particular seems to have the ability to connect with a part of the psyche we are fascinated with, but do not wish to come in contact with in ourselves. They offer us a glimpse into their experience, their pain and their world.”

Shadows In My Room is about a Murder Bot with mental illness, possibly schizophrenia, triggering hallucinations, who tried to explain to the world what they are feeling, and what they would love to be, or have. Haunted by the harm they have caused and their newly found consciousness they struggle to break free from the pain their memories, actions and past programming.

The vocals are performed by Jean-Luc Sinclair but ran through Native Instrument’s software, Reaktor for the vocoder effect.
