David Baron - The Velvet Inks Of Space

Listen on Spotify, Apple, Deezer

The album was designed for Star Gazing. One can look at the sky and slowly observe the moon and stars. The album also works for internal memory star-gazing: hazily recalling events from your life.

Renowned record producer from New York David Baron features on 25 platinum records and 6 Lenny Kravitz albums and for Bat For Lashes 'The Bride' he produced mixed and played all synths. Also co-writing and producing Ninth for Peter Murphy (Bauhaus). Baron has a vast modular synthesizer collection and a home Sun Mountain studio where The Lumineers recorded their BRIGHTSIDE album.

Recording Technique:

Entanglement was a traditional recording of a Steinway Grand piano and string quartet. This was then processed through a Loupé pedal - and manipulated. As the piece evolves layers come back - filtered and modulated. Everything is connected. Velvet Inks of Space is the Steinway D from 1954 mic’d fairly closely with a pair of tube Schoeps M222 Microphones. The room was mic’d with an Sontronics Apollo 2 stereo ribbon microphone. Trees of Ice combines a Felted and Unfelted piano through the loupé and a delay pedal called the Delay Llama extreme. Recorded during a huge ice storm where all the trees around me looked like they were covered with diamonds. Jinhi Points to the Moon uses a Celesta made in France in the late 1800s. This piece also uses Steinway B accents, Hammond, and Hologram pedal.
